Week of February 7th, 2011

Word up Science people.  It's been awhile since I've updated. Integrated Bio and such, I've moved over to Iportal for those students who've been following. You can see it at iportal.4j.lane.edu. Login in with your username and password that'd you would normally use to get on to the 'nets at school.

Night school peeps!! Check here to see what you may have missed in class and for links to download the notes and any missing worksheets.

I'll also post about any cool things I run across in my own browsing of the internet that I feel you should see or talk about during class. Check back often.

Week of January 18th

Not a lot of updates this week as we've mostly been working on our puppet shows.

A Day classes need to be ready to go on Monday while B days classes will present on Tuesday.  I'm really excited for all the projects and your puppets look great.

We will be testing breifly (about 15 questions, multiple-choice) on Wednesday (our final day) and then I'll see you next semester.

January 10/11th, Monday/Tuesday

Whoops,

Sorry, missed a day last week.  We did a nice cell lab looking at three different types of cells; an onion, cheek and tomato cell under the microscopes.  The labs were due at the end of class.

Today we quickly went through some of our Cell Organelle notes.  I highly encourage that you download these notes and study them in great detail to be successful on the test.  Also, they'll really help with your cell puppet show.

The puppet show is what we spent the second half of class on. We got in our groups, assigned group roles and wrote up a proposal describing a breif synopsis of the cell process you'll be acting out.

Remember to make this both a learning moment, but fun!  Have fun with the puppets.  Give them characteristics of people but still doing their assigned cellular roles.

Next class period will be all dedicated to working on the projects.  You'll need to have your script finished by the end of the period with puppet styles fleshed out.  You can pick up materials AT THE END OF THE DAY for your puppets.  There will not be class time to work on them.

January 4th, 5th Tuesday/Wednesday

Welcome back!  I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday break and are excited to be back to school.  I know I am.

Today we were introduced to our big Cell Puppet Show/Soap Opera project.  In this project you, in  a group, will perform some action that goes on inside of a cell, acting out the roles of the organelles as puppets or characters.  This is a major project that will take us through the end of the semester.  Definitely one you can't miss.  Here is the handout for the puppet show.

After that, we talked about and started learning about organelles in a cells.

Here are the notes for that: -------->  CELL ORGANELLE NOTES

And, here's the notesheet to use that goes along with it: --------> Cell Note sheet

Make sure you have this for class as this will provide the background information you need to write a successful script for the puppet show.

Tomorrow we're going into the lab to look at onion and tomato cells under the microscope and get more familiar with the cell organelles.

Wednesday/Thursday, December 15/16th

Today we did a lab over proper microscope use to get us into our cells unit.

We're going to be using the microscope a lot because, well, cells are small and can't be seen without one.

After this, we're off for two weeks and then it's back to awesome science!

Monday/Tuesday, December 13/14th 2010

Good day all!  I hope you found your weekend relaxing and/or enjoyable.

Today we came in a took our little test over BioMolecules.  It was a 15 question scan-tron test covering our last unit.  If you missed it, you need to make sure you make it up, otherwise you'll receive a score of 50%.  If you need to download the notes, you can go to iportal.4j.lane.edu and log in and download it, or just look back a few posts here on the blog to download it.

After the test, we answered some questions about the history of Cells and such.  Cells; that's going to be our next unit of study.  Bill Nye the Science Guy introduced us to them today with an enjoyable episode.

Tomorrow, we're going into the lab to learn how to work with the microscopes including learning how to properly set up a wet-mount slide, focus the microscope and the process of taking detailed drawings of what we're observing.

It's a big lab activity and it should take us through until the break.

Cheers,

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Well, were almost done until Winter Break. One week to go.

To was a crazy Friday with the short periods, so we weren't able to get much done, but I think we got enough.

We started with our Brainteaser warmup, handed back your Starch Labs from the other day and then jumped right into finishing our notes.

Today our notes took us over Proteins, really hitting on how wide a variety there are and how important they are for every, day-to-day cell function through Nucleic Acids, the masters and lords of the cell processes.

DNA and RNA are both really cool molecules and we'll be looking at them a lot closer during our Cell unit, which is the next unit up.

Monday/Tuesday we're going to have a test of this MacroMolecule stuff, so be ready by opening your notes over the weekend and re-reading what you wrote.

Have a great weekend,
